英語論文にはさまざまな固有名詞が登場します。往々にしてそれらの頭文字は大文字で表記されていますが、普段何気なく目にする固有名詞の大文字表記について科学論文という見地から紹介してみようと思います。
先ずは固有名詞をいくつかのジャンルに分け説明致します。本記事では「地名」と「社会文化的名称」を取り上げます。
◆地名
都市、郡（区）、州、国、大陸、島、半島、海峡、水系（池・湖・海など）、山脈、通り、公園、森、峡谷、ダム、特定地域、地域などの公認名称および行政区の地名などの各頭文字は大文字にします。
〈例〉
the British Isles, the Antarctic, the Black Forest, the Bay Area, Central America, the China Sea, Cook Country, Fifth Precinct, Fisherman's Wharf, the 43rd Ward Office, the Great Lakes, Green Mountains, Gulf of Mexico, the High Plains, Hoover Dam, Hudson bay, the Iron Curtain, Isle of Wight, Kettle Moraine, Kuril Islands, Lake Erie, the Loop[Chicago], Mexico City（但し、Quebec city という例もあり）, Mississippi River, New Trier Township, New York City, New York State（the state of New York とも表現される）, North Pole, Pacific Ocean, Province of Nova Scotia, Rocky Mountain National Park, Straits of Gibraltar, Third World, Tiananmen Square, the 23rd Congressional District, United Kingdom, Upstate New York, the West Coast
普通名詞は、固有名詞またはタイトルの一部として単数形では大文字表記されますが、複数形になると通常大文字では表記しません。
〈例〉
Mississippi and Missouri rivers, Atlantic and Pacific oceans
地域の公認名称および地理名称の一部として用いられる場合は大文字表記にしますが、一般的な方角や位置を示す場合には正式名称の東西南北の方位は大文字にしません。
〈例〉
・He practices medicine in the Far East, in central China. His home is east of Chongqing (Chungking) but not as far east as Wuhan.
・She is a westerner. She lives in the West, 15 miles west of Salt Lake City, Utah.
・Go due north, then northwest.
North Carolina, Eastern influence, North Korea
（但し、southern France, northern Illinois, south Florida, northern California という例もあり）
東西南北の方位に由来する名詞および形容詞については大文字表記にすべきではありません。
〈例〉
midwesterner, southern-style cooking
◆社会文化的名称
言語、国民、民族、政党、宗教および宗派と分派などの名称は大文字表記にします。これらの名称に続く一般名称、政治原則は大文字表記にしません。民族名称として white あるいは black を使用する場合も大文字表記にしません。
また、文化的多様性についての認識が高まってきている現代においては、さまざまな文化的集団について言及する際に用いられる用語に関して、それらに対する好みや受け止められ方が変化していっていることを感じとることが重要になります。過去数年間の時代や物事の受け止め方の変化につれて、例えば Black, Aflo-American, African American という語が文学に入ってきて支持されるように変わってきたことがあります。

the English language, Southeast Asian community, of Spanish ancestry, Hispanic population, Native American, Sanskrit, Europeans, the Jewish people, a Baptist church（First Baptist Church とも表現される）, African American, French people, Chirichahua Apache, Protestant
最後に使い分けをわかりやすくした文章の例を紹介します。
・Although he has been a member of the Republican party for years, at one time he was a Democrat. He nonetheless has always endorsed the principles of democracy in our republican form of government. He is democratic in his attitudes toward social equality.
