普通名詞は、固有名詞またはタイトルの一部として単数形では大文字表記されますが、複数形になると通常大文字では表記しません。

地域の公認名称および地理名称の一部として用いられる場合は大文字表記にしますが、一般的な方角や位置を示す場合には正式名称の東西南北の方位は大文字にしません。

東西南北の方位に由来する名詞および形容詞については大文字表記にすべきではありません。

midwesterner, southern-style cooking ◆社会文化的名称 言語、国民、民族、政党、宗教および宗派と分派などの名称は大文字表記にします。これらの名称に続く一般名称、政治原則は大文字表記にしません。民族名称として white あるいは black を使用する場合も大文字表記にしません。 また、文化的多様性についての認識が高まってきている現代においては、さまざまな文化的集団について言及する際に用いられる用語に関して、それらに対する好みや受け止められ方が変化していっていることを感じとることが重要になります。過去数年間の時代や物事の受け止め方の変化につれて、例えば Black, Aflo-American, African American という語が文学に入ってきて支持されるように変わってきたことがあります。 〈例〉
